Thiruvananthapuram: BJP state president, P S Sreedharan Pillai demanded the resignation of Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan in the wake of the amicus curiae report which stated that the Kerala floods was a man-made disaster.
"The left government cannot hide away from the responsibility of the worst ever flood which had hit the state. Murder charges should be slapped against the Chief Minister, electricity minister and the officials concerned," he said.
He added that the compensation for flood victims should be doubled. A probe should be conducted into the flaws in giving compensation, rebuilding and rehabilitation.
He alleged that CPM and state government had criticized the central government and the central forces, which helped in the rescue mission, to hide these lapses. BJP had clarified in the beginning that the state government had created the disaster by opening the dams. He said that the amicus curiae report shows that the statements of BJP were true.
The 49-page explanatory report submitted by Jacob P Alex at the high court stated that dams were opened without abiding by the criteria. It demanded a judicial probe to find if opening of the dams without considering the guidelines and issuing warnings, had caused the disaster.
According to the amicus curiae report, the August floods had claimed 433 human lives, affected 5.4 million people and displaced 1.4 million. The total loss incurred by the state was to the tune of Rs 26,720 crore and the total recovery needs are estimated at 31,000 crore, it added.
