Thiruvananthapuram: The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has issued a notice to the state government, asking to give an explanation about its stand on protecting land in Munnar. The NGT's directive came while hearing a petition filed by CPI state executive committee member P Prasad, seeking immediate intervention to protect Munnar.

The Tribunal will reconsider the petition on January 12. The Centre and the state government are opposite parties in Prasad's petition.

In the 12-page petition, CPI leader sought immediate action to clear large-scale encroachments in the eco-sensitive zones of Munnar, thereby protecting the hill station.

The petition pointed out that the Forest Department has no control over the area as politicians and influential people have encroached land in Munnar. He demanded that the Court should intervene in the issue.

The petition was heard by a bench of NGT in Chennai.

Prasad said that he decided to file the petition with the support of CPI.
