New Delhi: The Central Government approached the Supreme Court demanding that the Mullaperiyar Dam issue be handed over to the central authority based on the 2021 Dam Safety Act. The move came days after the central government stated in the Rajya Sabha that Mullaperiyar Dam comes under the purview of the Dam Safety Act. Supreme Court also viewed that it is more apt for the Mullaperiyar issue to be handed over to National Dam Safety Authority.
Advocate General Aishwarya Bhati told Supreme Court that a circular was issued regarding formation of the National Dam Safety Authority. Further, she also requested the apex court to send cases pertaining to dam safety to the newly constituted body.
The apex court adjourned the case till Tuesday, asking the government to submit a report on the steps taken by the central government after the law came into force.
A bench headed by Justice AM Khanwilker asked the government to give a clear picture of matters handled by the National Dam Safety Authority. The design of the dam, its monitoring, inspection, operation and maintenance should be handled by the national authority. The court also viewed that it should be the duty of the national authority to resolve the dispute between the state dam safety authorities.
Tamil Nadu also agreed to leave the Mullaperiyar issue to the National Authority.
