Mudslide in Munnar Lockhart Gap: One dead, one missing


Two construction workers identified as Udayan and Kamal hailing from Tamil Nadu were trapped in the mud slide occurred during the renovation works in the national highway. Among them, Udayan’s body was recovered on Wednesday from one km down the road.

Munnar: Body of one of the two persons who were trapped in mud slide at Munnar Lockhart Gap in Kochi-Dhanushkodi national highway has been recovered on Wednesday morning.

Two construction workers identified as Udayan and Kamal hailing from Tamil Nadu were trapped in the mud slide occurred during the renovation works in the national highway. Among them, Udayan’s body was recovered on Wednesday from 1 km down the road.

Fire force, police and revenue officials are continuing search operation in the place. Three people identified as Pattambi native Sudheer, Chinnan and Bhagyaraj had sustained injuries in the mishap. They are still being treated at the hospital.

The landslip occurred while rocks were being removed using excavator. As heavy rain and fog hindered the rescue operations, searching had to be continued in the early morning.

The mishap occurred at the same place where a huge mud slide took place two months ago. The officials stated that minor landslips are still happening in the place. The traffic in Kochi-Dhanushkodi national highway has been disrupted following the mudslide.
