Thiruvananthapuram: At a time when the police have sought the answer sheets in connection with the irregularities in University college here, the university is hurrying to auction the answer sheets. The move is on the pretext of auctioning answer sheets that are two or more years old.

The Kerala University examination department has initiated procedures to auction answer sheets from 2016. Circle Inspector M Anilkumar, who is investigating the case, had sought the answer sheets of Shivaranjith since 2016 from the university registrar.

Police had seized BSc answer sheets of the year 2016 from the house of Shivaranjith, the primary accused in the University college murder attempt case. The police also seized answer sheets of another accused Pranav during the raid. The two had secured first and second spots in the PSC police rank list.

The police had sought the answer sheets to conduct forensic examination. According to law, the university must keep safely the answer sheets for two years after the results are announced. Then the university can sell them through auction.

Kerala University has already sold out all the answer sheets till 2015. Though the answer sheets of 2016 could have been sold last year, it did not materialise as files in this regard could not be moved forward. According to university officials, the old answer sheets are being sold out as there is no room to keep the present answer sheets safe.

In 2008, the university had lost 40,000 answer sheets of university assistant examination which resulted in the investigation on appointment fraud hitting a dead end. Auctioning of the controversial answer sheet will adversely affect the investigation.

Police suspect that besides Shivaranjith and Pranav, other students are also involved in the examination fraud. The finding of answer sheets from University college union office also points to involvement of other students.

However, neither the principal nor the college officials were ready to hand over these answer sheets to police. It is alleged that this is to help the Students Federation of India (SFI) activists.

Meanwhile, Kerala University Vice Chancellor P. V. Mahadevan Pilla said the examination department has been directed to keep the controversial answer sheets separately and safe.
