Cherthala: A woman suffering from mental illness threw her 20-day-old infant into a canal in Alappuzha. The child was placed in a plastic basket when it was thrown into the canal near her residence. Fortunately, a relative saw this and rescued the baby. The incident happened at Cherthala on Thursday evening.

The child has been admitted to the Intensive Care Unit of the Govt Medical College in Alappuzha. The child did not sustain severe injuries. Following the delivery of the child in the seventh month of pregnancy, the infant and mother were under observation in a room at their own house. They were discharged from the hospital only on Saturday. The woman informed police that the baby was thrown out of anguish of not seeing her elder child.

It was her brother-in-law who saw the woman throwing the plastic basket into the canal. Arthunkal inspector PG Madhu said that the police have directed the family to take the woman for consultation to a psychiatrist.
