Kozhikode: The district administration has revealed that more than 10,600 dogs were sterilised under the Animal Birth Control program (ABC) in Kozhikode. The plan is to increase the sterilisation drive from 15-20 dogs per day to 20-20 dogs per day.
Meanwhile, the Union Government has decided to strengthen measures regarding the sterilisation of dogs in the country. As per the latest measures, only the ABC centres functioning under the State Animal Welfare Board will be allowed to sterilise the dogs.
In Kozhikode, such permission is granted to the ABC centre in Poolakadavu. However, for the past month, the sterilisation drive has been temporarily halted here due to some repair work.
Around 400 pet owners have taken licences as per the government mandate. The licence is issued only to pets that received the anti-rabies vaccine. The licence cost for a year for dogs is Rs 500 and Rs 100 for cats.
