Chennai: Southern Railway informed that more MEMU trains would replace passenger trains in Kerala. Memu trains will be introduced in place of unreserved special passenger trains in state.

Many coaches in passenger trains are still in use despite completing service period. The Memu trains will be introduced based on its availability. The Memu trains are more faster and can accommodate more passengers than traditional trains. Further, more Memu trains will be introduced during peak hours to slowly phase out the decade-old passengers trains.

In the Palakkad division, Kozhikode-Shornur, Kozhikode-Thrissur, Coimbatore-Thrissur, Shornur-Coimbatore, Palakkad-Nilambur and Nilambur-Shornur passenger train services have not resumed yet. In the Thiruvananthapuram division, about half of the passenger trains that were in service before Covid-19 are still to start service.

The resumption of passenger trains in Thiruvananthapuram and Palakkad divisions will be with MEMU coaches, the Southern Railway Operations Division said. Steps have also been taken to open more restaurants at several railway stations.
