More foreigners involved in gold smuggling, reveals Swapna Suresh
Kochi: Gold smuggling case accused Swapna Suresh has revealed involvement of more foreigners in gold smuggling, sources hinted. Apart from employees in UAE consulate, many foreign citizens are involved in the crime. Swapna’s statement including this revelation was submitted in a sealed cover before the Economic Offences court, it is learnt.
Swapna Suresh made fresh revelations to Customs on November 27. It is identified that these revelations are crucial in the case. Apart from gold smuggling, Swapna also opened up about dollar smuggling. The probe team hinted that many VIPs are involved in it.
But the officials did not disclose their names. These names were not mentioned in the court order also. Meanwhile, the court expressed anxiety over Swapna’s statement.
At the same time, the confidential statement of Sarith was handed over to the court in a sealed cover. It is pointed out that Sarith’s statement includes various facts which validate Swapna’s statement. Sarith’s statement was recorded on November 28 and 29.
The custody period of the accused was extended for three days considering the seriousness of their statement. The involvement of foreign citizens in the crime will come under the NIA probe. Hence, NIA will seek custody of Swapna for further interrogation.
