Kochi: The Crime Branch (CB) has recorded the statement of historian Dr MR Raghava Varier in the case pertaining to the authencity of Sabarimala copper plate inscriptions in possession of conman Monson Mavunkal. The CB officials recorded the statement of Varier at his house in Koyilandy, Kozhikode.

According to the statement given by Varier, he has read the inscriptions of the copper plate which is in the possession of Monson. However, he neither remembers nor is sure of the contents. Varier said he read the inscriptions when he visited Monson’s house. His interest in history led him to Monson's house to read the inscriptions.

Ever since Mavunkal was arrested by the CB police, reports surfaced about the authenticity of a copper plate inscription pertaining to the Sabarimala temple in his possession. The copper inscription had assumed widespread attention during the 2018 Sabarimala protests when news highlighted it as an authentic document on the rituals and customs of Sabarimala.

According to the preliminary findings in the case, the copper plate was fake, like many other claims made by Monson. The recording of statement from the historian who read the inscriptions has been done as an extension of the probe.

It is learnt that if Archaeological Survey of India submits a report confirming that this copper plate is fake, then Monson will be booked in that case too. For further examination of copper plate, an expert committee need to be formed and CB has given directive to Archaeology Director in Thrissur.
