Mohiniyattom exponent Kalamandalam Leelamma passes away
Thrissur: Renowned Mohiniyattom dancer and Sangeet Natak Akademi award winner Kalamandalam Leelamma passed away at her residence at Athani in Thrissur at around 11.30 am on Thursday.
She was 65. Leelamma has been undergoing medical treatment for a long time.
She had been honoured with the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award by the Central Government for her contribution to the dance form. She has also been honoured by the Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Akademi.
Born at Mattakkara in Kottayam, she took her dance lessons from Kalamandalam. Later, she became a teacher at the same institution. Leelamma had intensive lessons in Mohiniyattam, Bharatanatyam and Kuchipudi and had trained under Kalamandalam Sathyabhama and Kalamandalam Chandrika.
Leelamma had her senior fellowship from the Cultural Department, Government of India. She has represented Kerala in many national and international dance festivals.
Leelamma had done extensive research in Mohiniyattom and has set up a facility ‘Swathichitra’ in Thrissur for the same.
She has performed in a documentary directed by Adoor Gopalakrishnan.
She is survived by husband Madhusoodanan and children Krishnaprasad and Krishnapriya.
