Mohanlal gets HC notice in ivory possession case
Kochi: The High Court has sent a notice to actor Mohanlal in connection with the ivory possession case registered by the forest department. The notice is following a petition in the HC which complained that no action was being taken against the actor for keeping ivory at his residence.
The forest department had submitted a charge sheet at the Perumbavoor court last month stating that Mohanlal was the first accused in the case. However, Mohanlal on Monday filed an affidavit in the HC against the charge sheet. In the affidavit, Mohanlal stated that he has permission to keep ivory. Hence, the charge sheet will not be valid.
“I have permission and a valid licence to possess ivory. Hence there are no legal problems for me to keep the ivory. As such, the charge sheet will not be legally valid," Mohanlal clarified in the court. The actor also alleged that the incident adversely affected his image among the public.
The Income Tax department had recovered four ivory tusks from Mohanlal’s residence in Thevara in 2012. Following this, a case was registered. However, a charge sheet was registered against the actor only after seven years.
The forest department, which had taken a stance supporting the actor three times earlier, has now taken a stand against him and filed a charge sheet naming him as accused.
