Thrissur: Corporation Mayor MK Varghese, who reached Govt Higher Secondary school, Punkunnam for the victory day celebrations, walked out as he found his photograph on the board smaller than that of the MLA.

Following the controversy, P Balachandran MLA did not attend the programme.

In the absence of both of them, chief guest NA Gopakumar, who is the education standing committee chairman of the corporation, inaugurated the function. Councillor AK Suresh, who arrived to extend felicitations, presided over the programme.

Though a Mayor comes top in hierarchy when compared to an MLA, his photograph was small in the flex board compared to the MLA, said the Mayor. After expressing his discontent, the mayor refused to step on the stage. He said that a letter will be sent to the protocol officer and to the department head regarding the matter.

Mayor MK Varghese had earlier stated that refusing to salute a mayor is a grave protocol violation.
