Minister threatens to suspend engineers for not removing ring bund, causing waterlogging
Thrissur: Minister for Agriculture V. S. Sunil Kumar on Monday lashed out at irrigation department engineers for not completely removing the ring bund in the regulator phase canal at Enamavu (also known as Enamakkal) here.
The minister along with MLA Murali Perunelli called the engineers to the Nehru Park near Enamavu around noon following complaints from residents regarding waterlogging in large number of areas including Arimbur, Chaloor, Alappad, Anthikkad, Karikkodi, Puzhakkal and Pullazhi.
Stating that hundreds of people were affected due to lapses from irrigation department engineers, Sunil Kumar lashed out at the officials. He also warned that the officials will be suspended if they fail to take corrective measures immediately.
Stating that three executive engineers are responsible for all these people being affected by the floodwater, Sunil Kumar said flood situation would not have been so bad had the engineers performed their duty without fail.
The minister did not mince his words while reprimanding the engineers. “Would this happen had you people opened the bunds completely? Didn’t the district Collector ask you to remove the bunds? I shall call the police and arrest all of you. If the bunds are not roved by tonight, all of you will be suspended,” the minister said.
The minister's words were greeted with cheers and applause by the residents who were at the spot.
“Several panchayats are under water because of you and public representatives including ministers and MLAs are hearing the complaints and blames by the people. I will sit here until you remove the bunds completely,” the minister added.
Following the minister’s intervention, the officials completely removed the ring bund. Sunil Kumar oversaw the procedure. He was seen directing workers to stay safe while removing the bund.
