Irinjalakuda: Reminiscing her yesteryears, Minister R Bindu graced the stage as ‘Damayanthi’ from Nalacharitha leaving the audience at ‘Koodalmanikyam’ awestruck.

The Minister who returned to the stage after a hiatus of 3 decades, played her favourite character ‘Damayanthi’. Bindu had started learning ‘Kathakali’ at the age of 13 under her Guru Kalanilayam Raghavan Ashaan.

It was all women on stage on day 1 of ‘Nalcharitha’. The minister was accompanied by artists Jayashree Gopi, C.M. Beena and Jayanthi Devaraj.

Bindu who had won first prize for ‘Kathakali’ at the Calicut University youth festival in the late 1980s, had to find time amidst her busy schedule to practice for the performance.

“The performance took me back to the old days. I did not have stage fright, but could feel my age as I was performing,“ said the Minister.

“I had always wanted to get back on stage. But official duties and family responsibilities kept me away,” she added.
