Kozhikode: Minister of Forest AK Saseendran assured Maneka Gandhi to analyse and reconsider the order granting authority for the local governing bodies to cull the wild boars after a year, if necessary. Maneka Gandhi MP had criticised the Kerala government’s order which granted the authority to shoot and kill the wild boars to the local self-governments.
Though the state government had approached the Centre several times to declare wild boars as vermin, the latter always turned down the request. Hence, Kerala relied on the special powers of the Chief Wildlife Warden to issue special orders to cull wild animals, if the officer was satisfied that the specific animal is a threat to human life and property. The minister informed that it is by utilising this provision that the local bodies were empowered to issue authority to kill wild boars that pose a menace in a particular locality.
The order specified that no wild boar should be killed using poison, explosives or electrocution. Apart from culling methods, the government order mentioned disposing of the carcass scientifically. The details have to be recorded in a special register.
The minister elaborated the data of the people who were killed in wild boar attack recently in the state. 21 persons were killed and 515 were seriously injured between 2017 and 2022 in the wild boar attacks. Rs 5.65 crore has been dispensed to the date for the 10,669 complaints of crop damage caused by the attacks.
