Milma to spend Rs 4.75 for processing 1 kg plastic cover
Kottayam: As part of effectively implementing the ban on single-time use plastic, an action plan has been prepared to collect and process the plastic covers of Milma products. The covers collected by Haritha Karma Sena will be handed over to Clean Kerala Company for scientific waste management. The government entrusted the company for this and Milma will be paying them a fee.
Kerala Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (Milma) is spending Rs 4.75 for 1 kilogram of cover. One paisa is charged for one cover. The company will collect the covers from Material Collection Facility (MCF) at panchayats.
About 20 lakh covers are thrown away in the state on a daily basis. It has been planned to remove the covers every month. As Milma covers cannot be reused, they will be used for tarring and similar purposes.
According to the solid waste management rules, the manufacturers are responsible to ensure scientific treatment of plastic waste. The plastic ban order clearly directs the government institutions to follow the same and thus Milma made an agreement with the Clean Kerala Company, said chairman P A Balan.
The project will be implemented in ten phases. In the initial phase, plastic waste will be collected from Thiruvananthapuram, Ernakulam, Kannur, Kottayam and Alappuzha districts. At present, Clean Kerala Company send waste for recycling through Resource Recovery Facility (RRF) in block panchayats.
