Milma to increase milk price by Rs 4 per litre; Govt approves decision
Thiruvananthapuram: The price of Milma milk is increased by Rs 4 per litre in the state. The price of all types of milk will be increased by Rs 4. This was decided in the meeting convened under the leadership of Minister for Dairy Development K. Raju.
Milma had demanded to increase the price by Rs 5-7. But the government decided to increase only Rs 4. Dairy farmers will be provided 83.75 percent of the increased price. According to this, they will get Rs 3.35.
Though Milma informed that they will provide 80 percent of the increased price to the farmers, the government stated that it would not be sufficient. Thus it was decided that 83.75 percent shall be given to the farmers.
Even though Milma can decide on its own, usually the price is increased only with government’s approval. Last time, milk price was hiked in 2017. Out of the increased Rs 4 then, Rs 3.35 was given to farmers. The farmers are benefitted by the price hike this time also. In government farms, the milk price is at Rs 46 with an increase of Rs 4.
After the recent floods, there was a decrease of over 1 lakh litres in milk production in the state. To compensate this, 3.60 lakh litre milk was purchased from other states. Last year also, the flood had caused a decline in milk production and 1.86 lakh litre was bought from other states.
