Migrant labourer among two killed in Piravom stone quarry accident

Local residents staged a protest at the spot alleging that the quarry was functioning illegally.

Kochi: Two labourers were killed in an accident at a stone quarry at Maneed in Piravom on Wednesday.

The deceased were identified as Maneed native Sasi and West Bengal native Deepak Natra. Both died on the way to the hospital.

The accident took place at Diamond Quarry near Aanamunthi in Maneed around 12 pm. While drilling rocks, large boulders, rocks and soil from the top came crashing down.

Sasi and Deepak, who were working at a dangerous spot, got trapped under the debris. Deepak was retrieved after several hours of effort.

Meanwhile, local residents staged a protest at the spot alleging that the quarry was functioning illegally.

Anoop Jacob MLA said that officials have been directed to check if the quarry was functioning with permissions.
