Merchants, exporters protest against restrictions on labourers at Kollam harbour
Kollam: The fish sale at Sakthikulangara fishing harbour was disrupted due to the non-cooperation of seafood merchants and exporters.
They resorted to a protest against the decision to restrict entry to the harbour using pass and stayed away from business on Thursday. The workers brought in by the merchants and exporters were not allowed to enter the harbour.
The authorities had issued restrictions on the number of people entering the harbour in the wake of Covid-19 pandemic.
The boats had gone to sea on Wednesday afternoon, based on odd-even rules, after the trawling ban ended. When the boats returned on Thursday, the merchants and exporters stayed away.
They demanded that their labourers should be issued passes with one-month validity and allowed to work at the harbour.
However, the authorities informed that passes can’t be issued to everyone as each merchant brings his own employees and so there will be a large number of people at the harbour.
A group of labourers are deployed here for unloading and sorting fish and other works.
