Thiruvananthapuram: NDA ally Bharath Dharma Jana Sena (BDJS) state president Thushar Vellappally on Tuesday said that the party will take up the statewide protest to appoint a non-Brahmin as the chief priest (Melsanthi)of Sabarimala temple. He was inaugurating the one-day long fast in front of the state secretariat here.
Devaswom Board must end caste discrimination in the appointment of chief priest. This is a shame on Kerala, Thushar said while inaugurating the protest. Caste should not be a bar for those who learned the tantric rituals, BDJS pointed out.
However, BJP is tight-lipped on the matter. The change will not be easy, they believe. They are curious about the move of their colleagues after the dismal performance in the elections in the state. BJP also wants the Hindu organisations to discuss the matter first before making any open statement.
The Travancore Devaswom Board that appoints the chief priest (Melsanthi) while responding to the demand said that they are not going to take an initiative as it may lead to a legal battle. Travancore National Prachar Sabha chairman R Shaji Sarma said that the BDJS should rather approach Supreme Court instead of protesting in front of the secretariat.
