Medicine scarcity: Karunya pharmacies to focus on ensuring availability of generic drugs

Thiruvananthapuram: After denying the scarcity for essential medicines in the government health centres and hospitals for the last couple of days, minister Veena George on Saturday has given selected employees the duty to ensure availability of medicines in the Karunya pharmacies.

Though doctors are directed to prescribe generic medicines (the chemical formation instead of brand name), some doctors may recommend certain brands which may not be available in Karunya stores. The employees will be tasked to identify such medicines and ensure its availability in the stores.

The state has increased the stock of anti-rabies immunoglobulin shots. Department already has a stock of 16,000 vials and another 64,000 vials will come soon.
