Maradu flats: Demolition during morning hours, explosives to be deployed in first 5 floors
Kochi: The ideal time for demolition of Maradu apartment complexes would be when the wind speed remains low, that is during the morning hours, according to the expert panel. The residents of the adjacent apartment complexes would be completely evacuated. Sources said that all the major traffic routes would be blocked. The buildings would be demolished when there is lowest traffic in the city. Then the final decision for the implosion will be taken, considering the suitable weather conditions.
The explosives would be deployed at the bottom five floors of the buildings. The building would be detonated within a matter of seconds. According to the expert committee, blasting the foundation would cause the whole building to collapse swiftly in downward direction thus preventing it's debris to scatter. The expert panel for the demolition of the buildings must include mining engineers.
The government appointed expert panel has approved the purchase of explosives from the city. The explosives will be brought in special convoys. The committee has made it mandatory for the demolition agency to comprise a Shotfirer (licensed by PESO) and Blasters (licensed by the Mines Directorate). Agencies have been asked to carry out a detailed study on the impact of the vibrations caused by the implosion.
According to the sources, the buildings posing low risk would be demolished first. Experts believe that this will instill some confidence in people. If there are any heritage buildings in the vicinity, their protection would be guaranteed by the agency. Local Self Department Government, P.W.D. engineers would supervise the demolition process. The government is considering the fact to provide a 100 crore third party insurance to the nearby residential areas.
It is reported that the expert committee has recommended 'Edifice Engineering' company to be assigned to demolish three flat complexes and 'Vijay Steels' for other two. Edifice is regarded to have most experience in building demolition and would be assigned the task of demolishing complex structures of Holly Faith H2O and Alfa Serene apartment complexes. It functions in collaboration with Jet Demolition company from South Africa. Vijay Steels which will demolish the Golden Kayaloram and Jain Coral Cove apartment complexes, has claimed to have demolished a 105 meter tall building in Panipat in Haryana.
