Maradu flat owners end hunger strike, agree to vacate on time
Kochi: Maradu flat owners have ended their hunger strike following discussions with Ernakulam district Collector S. Suhas. The flat owners agreed to vacate the buildings within the stipulated time but warned that they would restart the protest if compensation was not paid.
The flat owners have demanded the government to pay them the rent for shifting locations. During the discussion with Collector, they also sought to restore the power and water supply to the apartments. The collector agreed to this and the supply was restored in the evening. The officials also ensured to arrange an alternate place for the flat dwellers to stay.
Maraud flat owners started the hunger strike on Sunday morning seeking immediate disbursal of the interim compensation amount, more time to vacate the buildings, reinstatement of power and water supply, clarification regarding the alternative place to stay besides demanding the government to pay the rent at the alternate place.
Speaking to media after the meeting with Collector, the flat owners said the officials agreed to some of their demands and offered all help from within the limits of the Supreme Court order.
