Maoists kidnap forest workers, free them later
Pookkottumpadam: Maoists kidnapped three forest officials from T K Colony at Amarabalam near Nilambur and let them free after a few hours. The incident happened on Friday night at about 9.
A 9-member gang, which included woman, took the forest officials at gun point, according to DFO S Sajikumar. They were released after an hour’s ordeal in the forest. Their SIM cards from their phones were removed by the Maoists.
Forest watcher of Nilambur Ajayan, Forest watcher of the Silent Valley Ramanan and a temporary worker Ali were kidnapped by the Maoists. The Maoists threatened them after seeking food from them and took them away. Forest watcher Ramanan escaped from the Maoists. The Maoists immediately took the other two forest officials to a more interior place.
The Maoists told them that they are being freed as they were forest watchers and they only want forest officials. They also threatened that if anyone ventures into the forest wearing a khaki uniform they would be shot at. All three kidnapped persons are safe. A notice has also been pasted on the forest department office board.
The forest is the boundary to the Silent Valley and there is a Silent Valley Buffer zone Outpost and Nilambur South Forest Outpost. One can reach the place by taking a 12 km walk from Attapadi.
