Kannur: Many people in Kerala are concerned as they are suffering from prolonged cough and fatigue after fever episodes. In some people, cough and fatigue prolong for two to four weeks. Health practitioners also say that many are approaching hospitals with symptoms of viral fever.
In September, around 2,44,984 individuals visited the hospitals complaining of fever. Most cases were reported from Kozhikode, followed by Thiruvananthapuram and Kasaragod.
It may be noted that figure will go up if the number of people who had not sought treatment despite having a fever is considered. Some medical experts say those with asthma and lung issues used to have prolonged cough and congestion from normal fevers. But now those without such conditions are also suffering from cough and related issues.
Not just influenza virus, but also respiratory syncytial virus, adenoviruses are causing fevers. Some of them cause inflammation in the respiratory tract, which in turn results in a cough.
Bronchitis, pharyngitis and bronchiolitis are some conditions that may occur.
Meanwhile, the new trend is also attributed to climate change. The combination of hot temperature during the day, rain at night and lower temperature at night can increase the chances of cold.
On the other hand, people who contracted COVID-19 are prone to have more complications. A study on Covid affected individuals should be carried out to ascertain this.
