Many in Palakkad find solace in thattukkada business to navigate pandemic crisis

Palakkad: Data from the food safety department suggests that many in Palakkad ventured into the 'thattukkada' (wayside eatery) business to navigate the pandemic crisis.

The number of wayside eateries has significantly risen in the last year. Those registered for the license are around 600.

According to the officials, the number of eateries serving biriyani, idli and dosa has significantly risen. Similarly, individuals involved in sales of oil-based snacks like unni appam, sales of fish, sales of fruits and cool drinks business have also increased.

There is a high likeliness that the number increased as several people lost their occupations due to the Covid-19 situation. Notably, expatriates who returned to the district are also behind the boom.

The food safety department had made registration of the eateries mandatory. The department made it mandatory in the wake of its finding that many are not complying with quality standards. This, in turn, will enhance the safety and quality of the food.

The registration can be done online. The fee for a year is just Rs 100. The department informed that those involved in the business without registration will be fined.

Meanwhile, it is important to note that inflation has been affecting those who are involved in this business. Operational costs are high while competition is also increasing. However, most of them believe that their fortunes will be better.
