Manjeswaram bypoll: Youth League against candidate from outside constituency
Kasaragod: The Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) is facing problems over deciding the candidate for the Manjeswaram bypoll. On Tuesday, Youth League, the youth wing of IUML clarified that they will not accept anyone from outside the constituency as a candidate. Later, IUML leader P. K. Kunhalikutty said that the candidate will not be decided on Tuesday.
During the discussion to decide the Manjeswaram bypoll candidate on Tuesday, the Muslim League leadership had put forward the name of M.C Kamarudheen. However, a group of the regional leaders and Youth League, the youth wing of IUML did not agree to this. They demanded to make Youth League leader A.K.M. Ashraf the candidate in Manjeswaram.
Ashraf's supporters cited his popularity in the constituency and his ability to handle the local language as his advantages.
Meanwhile, another group wants IUML district general secretary M.C Kamarudheen to be the candidate. They say that Kamarudheen was considered for several elections but was never fielded. As a senior leader, he deserves a ticket this time around, his supporters from the region argued.
Following these arguments, the IUML high power committee decided not to take a decision on Tuesday. It is learned that the party is mulling the idea of naming a third leader as the candidate following the dispute over fielding Kamarudheen and Ashraf.
