Manjakkandi Maoist encounter: HC prevents cremation of bodies until further order

The HC directed the government to take steps to ensure that the bodies do not decompose. It mentioned that the mystery regarding their deaths needs to be solved.

Kochi: Kerala High Court on Tuesday issued an order preventing the burial of the bodies of the four Maoists killed in an encounter at Manjakkandi in Palakkad until further order.

The HC order comes after relatives of the deceased filed an appeal against the Palakkad sessions court’s verdict granting permission to cremate the bodies.

Earlier, the relatives of Karti and Manivasakam had approached the Palakkad sessions court against cremating the bodies. The court had stayed burying the bodies for four days. After the stay order ended on Monday, it granted permission to bury the bodies. Relatives of the Maoists approached the HC against this order.

The HC directed the government to take steps to ensure that the bodies do not decompose. The HC mentioned that the mystery regarding their deaths needs to be solved. It also demanded the government to submit the post mortem and other related documents.

Relatives of the Maoists approached the HC against cremating the bodies after allegations were raised that the incident was a fake encounter. Political parties including the Opposition and CPI had criticised the encounter and alleged that it was fake.

The relatives of the deceased have demanded to register a separate FIR and constitute a special investigation team to probe the encounter and killing.
