Thrissur: On March 30, 1988 Chandrasekhar underwent a kidney transplant at the Apollo hospital in Chennai. The donor was his mother Sarvamangala. Now after 33 years, Chandrasekhar is 65 years old and mother is 93 years.

With the transplanted kidney Chandrasekhar won gold medal in 11 km marathon at the Special Olympics World Games held in Abu Dhabi last year and thereby entered India Book of Records.

Chandrasekharan and Sarvamangala are achievers of unwritten honours. Sarvamangala is the oldest organ donor in India while Chandrasekhar is one of the two longest living organ recipient in India.

Sarvamangala is the founder of Kidney Foundation established 33 years ago and Chandrasekharan is its chairman. He is also the Indian ambassador of Global Kidney Foundation based in Britain and American Association of Kidney patients.

His father VG Varrier was a college professor.

They came to know of the entry to record book on Saturday while at the villa in Guruvayur. Chandrasekhar was actively involved in ensuring lifesaving drugs to patients in times of lockdown. Now he is trying to identify the Covid warriors and honour them.

Chandrasekhar had retired as general manager from a multi-speciality hospital and has been involved in humanitarian services since then.
