Man under police custody dies in Kozhikode, family alleges custodial torture

Deceased Sajeevan

Kozhikode: Sajeevan, a 42-year old man from Vatakara under police custody, died here on Thursday night, raising allegations of custodial torture by the family.

Sajeevan and few others were taken into police custody over a verbal spat after a car collision in Vatakara. According to those who accompanied Sajeevan to the police station, a SI and another constable brutally attacked him in the station.

Following that Sajeevan complained of chest pain which the officials did not bother to attend. “The officials did not offer any help to take him to hospital and for nearly 45 minutes we were running from pillar to post. It was the onlookers and autorickshaw drivers nearby the police station who intervened,” said one of the friends of the deceased.

Sajeevan collapsed on the police station premises. Onlookers tried to rush him to the hospital first by autorickshaw but later took an ambulance to the nearby cooperative hospital. Hospital authorities informed that Sajeevan had passed away but did not mention the cause of death, said one of Sajeeevan’s family members.

Later, the body was taken to the mortuary of Kozhikode Medical College. The procedures for autopsy are ongoing and the report will reveal more about the cause of death.

The family members claimed that he was physically stable and free of any ailments. He was taken under custody after returning from work. The family lodged a complaint alleging custodial torture and absence of timely medical help.

Vatakara district crime branch DySP will probe the case on the direction of SP.
