CB Biju

Thodupuzha: Police arrested a man, who faked himself as a cancer patient and embezzled lakhs from his former classmates and teachers. The accused has been identified as 45-year-old CB Biju of Karimannoor in Idukki.

Biju was a student of a college in Pala and was a member of a WhatsApp group of his former classmates. He used to send voice messages to his acquaintances and rang them up impersonating as his own relatives to request money. He made use of voice changing apps to convince his friends.

His friends raised a fund of nearly Rs 10.5 lakh and handed it over to Biju.

By making use of the voice changing apps, he contacted his former teachers in the name of his sister and asked for money. Police said that the teachers also collected Rs 15 lakh and gave it to him.

He produced fake documents for the treatment from a Tamil Nadu hospital and shared it via WhatsApp.

When he continued requesting money in the name of his ‘uncle’, the group members told him to come over a video call. Biju appeared in the video call by wrapping a white cloth on his head. The group members became suspicious by seeing Biju as ‘uncle’ and they later attempted to contact him. However, they were informed that Biju had died.

The scam surfaced when one of the group members spotted Biju from Thodupuzha. He realised that Biju has recently bought a car too. Soon, the friends lodged a complaint countersigned by 50 WhatsApp group members at Thodupuzha police station and a team under DySP MR Madhu Babu nabbed him without delay.
