Neyyattinkara: A man drowned while trying to save the life of his friend who entered the waters of the Neyyar river to bath. The deceased has been identified as Vipin (34), who runs an auto workshop in Olathanni.

Vipin drowned while trying to help his friend Shyam (28), who is still missing. The incident happened after they entered the waters of Neyyar river to bathe, near Olathanni, around 4:00 pm on Sunday.

On Sunday evening, Vipin and his elder son Pranav reached the banks of the river to wash clothes and take a bath. Vipin jumped into the water after seeing Shyam drowning while taking a bath. Locals rushed to the scene after Pranav, standing on the shore, shouted for help.

Later, a team of scuba divers from Neyyattinkara Fire Station initiated the rescue operation. However, the search operations were difficult due to undercurrents and thick mud deposits.

By 6:30 pm, the body of the Vipin was retrieved by the team. However, the team had to abandon the search operation to find Shyam due to limited visibility.
