Lorry spills watermelons causing death of 65-yr-old in Malappuram

Padapparamba (Malappuram): An elderly man died when a lorry loaded with watermelons lost control and fell over him. Chettippadi native Thekkeppattu Sreedharan Nair (65) was killed on Wednesday around 9.30 am while he was standing on the courtyard of his neighbour's house.

The lorry approaching Manjeri from Thoothukudi lost control while passing through a turn near the accident spot. The lorry rammed the yard where Sreedharan was standing and unfortunately fell on him. The compound wall of a nearby house was smashed in the mishap.

The body of the deceased was taken out with the help of three backhoe loaders following an effort spanning 20 minutes. He was declared `brought dead’ at the nearby EMS hospital.

Kolathur police arrived and examined the spot where the watermelons were lying scattered. Police have registered a case under section 304A for causing death by negligence against the lorry driver Santhana Vineesh (27).

Following post-mortem at Govt hospital in Perinthalmanna, the mortal remains were cremated on the residential premises. He is survived by wife Sunanda and children Arathi and Anjana.
