Man commits suicide while in police custody in Kottayam
Kottayam: A person was found to have committed suicide while in police custody in Kottayam. Manarcaudu native Navas was found to have hanged himself at the toilet in police station. The suicide occurred just before he was scheduled to be presented at the court.
Navas was taken in custody on Monday evening for allegedly drinking alcohol and creating nuisance. He was taken in protective custody after he attacked people at his home at Rajiv Gandhi colony in Parappallikkunnu near Areeparamba. His arrest was recorded later.
DGP has ordered Ernakulam range IG and Kottayam police chief for action against the concerned police officials in the case of custodial death.
As per human rights commission guidelines, a magistrate level probe will be conducted. Custodial deaths should never occur. Higher police officials are camping at the site, DGP further informed.
