Malayali soldier arrested for allegedly assaulting student on train after forcing her to drink


Alappuzha: A soldier has been arrested for allegedly sexually assaulting a woman after intoxicating her with liquor, inside a running train.

The arrestee, Pratheesh Kumar, is a serviceman posted in Jammu and Kashmir. He was returning home for vacation when the alleged incident happened.

According to a complaint filed by the survivor's husband, the alleged attack happened on Thursday evening between the Ernakulam-Alappuzha stretch on the Rajdhani Express.

The woman is studying at Manipal University. She boarded the train from Udupi. The accused allegedly befriended her and forced her to drink liquor. He assaulted her when she fell unconscious, states the complaint.
The complaint also notes that the woman was undergoing treatment for depression for the past month, and the accused exploited her mental situation.

The complaint was filed on Friday evening in Thiruvananthapuram. It was later handed over to the Alappuzha police. Pratheesh will be produced before the court on Saturday afternoon, police said.
