Thiruvananthapuram: In a joy for all language lovers, Malayalam alphabet has returned to Class 1 textbooks. The alphabet has reportedly been included as a special page on the third volume of Class 1 Malayalam textbook.

The alphabet was removed from the textbooks after the curriculum revision in 2013. Following which, ‘Mathrubhumi’ had launched a campaign demanding to bring back the alphabets to school syllabus.

Several cultural and literary figures also demanded the government to incorporate the ‘Malayalam Aksharamala’ to the curriculum.

Following this, V Sivankutty announced last year that the alphabet will be included in the textbooks from the next academic year onwards.

However, the textbook based on the revised syllabus can be distributed only in 2024. This led to protests and the government decided to include the alphabets as a special page on the textbooks.

Apparently, the Malayalam alphabet was included in the textbooks of all other classes, except class 1.

The alphabet will be included in all the textbooks that will be printed next academic year, said the education department.
