Malappuram youth held for smuggling gold worth Rs 52 lakh at Karipur airport

Aneesh Babu, gold seized by police

Malappuram: Police nabbed a youth for smuggling one kilogram of gold from Abu Dhabi to Kerala via Karipur airport. The accused is identified as Tirur native Aneesh Babu (25). According to police, Aneesh attempted to smuggle gold worth Rs 52 lakh in the form of two rods. The gold was coated with mercury to turn it into silver colour.

Aneesh reached Karipur airport on Friday by an IndiGo flight. Police took him under custody while leaving the airport in a car after evading the security check of Customs. Police nabbed Aneesh as per the tip-off received by Malappuram police chief S Sujith Das. Initially, Aneesh refused to admit the crime and police also could not find the gold in his bag. The gold was found later after examining his trolly bag in detail.

The gold rod coated with silver colour was attached inside the trolley bag instead of the steel rod. The accused had covered it with a plastic sheet to cheat the customs officials during the inspection.

The confiscated gold will be handed over to the court and a detailed report will be submitted to Customs for further investigation.
