Malappuram woman, children dig well in 22 days

Kuttippuram: Muhammed Sinan sings Mappila songs when he helps his mother, Shakira, and elder brother Muhammed Niyas dig a well in front of their house in Malappuram. The trio spent hours together digging and removing mud for three weeks. On the 22nd day, their eyes were filled with happy tears when water from the surrounding aquifer started to fill the well.

Shakira (40) and her two children, Muhammed Sinan, eight standard students, and Muhammed Niyas, a plus-one student, fought against all odds to dig a well. The lack of money forced the family to do it on their own on the newly-bought land here. Construction of their dream home is underway on the 5-cent piece of land.

The family started working during the Christmas holidays. They rented equipment to dig and transfer the mud. They worked every day from 9 am to 6 pm and returned to their rented house. Their mission turned fruitful on the 22nd day.

Shakira used Rs 2 lakh handed over by the grama panchayath and money earned through hard labour to buy 5 cents of land in Pattuparambu. However, Shakira says she still owes money to the landowner. Meanwhile, construction of her house is ongoing here. She has also sought the help of the panchayath with funds allocated for building homes.
