Kozhikode: Malappuram district in Kerala has bagged third position in terms of the highest total number of passport issued till December 2022. Reportedly, there are a total of 19,32,622 passports in the district. Mumbai topped the list with 35,56,067 passports followed by Bengaluru (34,63,405).
Kerala has the highest number of passport holders in India. As per data, 1.13 crore Malayalees (31.6 per cent) have passports in the state. Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu occupy the second and third places with 12.7 per cent and 8.4 per cent passport holders respectively.
According to data till December 8, 2022, there are a total of 9.58 crore passport holders in the country. The data was revealed by the Ministry of External Affairs in the Lok Sabha in response to a question in this regard.
Kerala accounts for 11.8 per cent of the total passport holders in India. From 2021 to 2022, passport holders have doubled in the state. Among the regional passport offices, there has been a rise of 59.96 per cent in Kozhikode, 67.22 per cent in Kochi, and 59.14 per cent in Thiruvananthapuram.
Reasons:
- The fact that courses can be completed in foreign universities without delay has largely encouraged students to apply for passports.
