Malappuram: In a major hawala racket bust, Malappuram police seized Rs 1.45 crore here on Saturday. Two Ernakulam natives were taken into custody in connection with the case. The accused are identified as Kochi Thoppumpady natives Rajaram alias Raju, and Anil.

It is observed that Hawala money had become common around various spots in the districts. Following this, police strengthened inspections in these areas.

The accused were nabbed while transporting the money after placing it in a secret space set up inside a Maruti Ertiga car.

The police busted the racket based on a tip-off received by the District Police Chief. The duo who are in custody is being interrogated.

Hawala money worth Rs 4.5 crores was seized in Malappuram within the past week.

Police had received information that hawala money is being taken to Malappuram from Maharashtra. The cops revealed that more raids will be conducted across Malappuram to bust such illegal activities.
