Malabar's first paddy museum set up in Malappuram
Mankada: The first paddy museum in Malabar was set up at the BEd centre of Calicut University at Padinjattumuri in Malappuram. University Vice Chancellor Dr. K. Muhammed Basheer inaugurated the museum on Tuesday.
The museum exhibits different varieties of paddy seeds, including those on the verge of extinction, collected from different parts of the world. It is prepared in a way to be useful for the research fellows, students and the public. The museum was set up with Rs 1 lakh worth financial assistance from Koottilangadi Krishi Bhavan.
Prinicipal Gopalan Mankada informed that about 75 paddy varieties like Aaryan, Chennellu, Mundakan, Kuruka, Triveni, Rakthasali, Navara, Basmathi, Nazarbath, Chembavu etc. have already been collected and also they are planning to farm and protect the varieties that face extinction threat.
