Makaravilakku on Wednesday, temple doors to remain open on Tuesday night
Sabarimala: The hill shrine of Lord Ayyappa in Sabarimala is gearing up for the auspicious Makaravilakku on January 15, Wednesday. Ahead of the grand festival, ‘Sudhikriya’ (Purification rituals) will be performed at the temple on Monday.
‘Pamba Vilakku’ and ‘Pamba Sadhya’, the customs related to the Makaravilakku festival will be held on Tuesday.
As the ‘Makarasamkramam’ falls in the wee hours on Wednesday, the temple doors will remain open on Tuesday night.
The rituals on Makaravilakku day will begin with Makarasamkrama pooja at 2 am. Devotees will witness the holy Makarahyothi at Ponnambalamedu around 6.45 pm.
The temple will be open for devotees from Januaty 16 to 20. To mark the culmination of the Makaravilakku festival, representative of Pandalam royal family will visit the temple on January 21. The temple doors will be closed when the royal family member leaves the temple.
The temple which was closed on December 27 to mark the culmination of the mandala pilgrim season was reopened for Makaravilakku festival on December 30.
Like last year, security has been beefed up in the shrine and premises.
A new batch of 1,397 police personnel took charge at Sabarimala for the Makaravilakku festival.
