Kochi: Kudumbashree is all set to maintain the railway stations which are on the verge of closure. A project is under consideration to entrust Kudumbashree with the maintenance responsibility of small railway stations.
At present, the maintenance of small railway stations is entrusted with agents on commission basis. But most of them ended the contract due to very low remuneration. Many of the small railway stations in the state are in an abandoned state.
Railway does not appoint permanent staff in smaller stations, claiming that spending money for their salary and other benefits will only add to the loss. It is assessed that the loss of income from small stations is a lapse from the part of the agents. Even the ticket counters of some stations are found closed.
Kanjiramattam, Chottanikkara Road, Kaduthuruthy, Kumaranellur, Kappil, Veli and other stations are considered for the initial phase of the new project. Senior Divisional Commercial Manager Rajesh Chandran said that the scheme to entrust the station duties with Kudumbashree is under consideration of various departments.
Kudumbashree and Railway are already collaborating in various sectors. The AC waiting rooms and parking centre in the stations under Thiruvananthapuram division are managed by Kudumbashree. Also their efficiency in working is widely appreciated.
Earlier, there were plans to renovate small stations with the cooperation of local bodies. However, the plan was dropped as it was not properly encouraged and supported. Later, the project to collaborate with Kudumbashree was prepared after conducting a detailed study in this regard.
