Kochi: The massive victory of Uma Thomas in Thrikkakara came as a morale boost for the UDF in Kerala. The win will assert the leadership of VD Satheesan and K Sudhakaran in Congress and give confidence to the party to go ahead with its political campaigns against the LDF government.
The effort taken to voice concerns of the people affected by the implementation of the SilverLine Project is the major talk point at this moment. Even CM Pinarayi Vijayan has well before stated that the poll is not a mandate of the prestigious project of the government, and UDF will strengthen its movement in view of the election results.
Despite Thrikkakara being a stronghold of UDF, there were indications that LDF may put up a tough fight in the byelections. However, LDF's experiments did not show any results. The efforts of CPM to woo voters by bringing in KV Thomas, and arresting PC George failed to turn into votes.
The victory also underlines the role played by the duo - Opposition leader VD Satheesan and KPCC president K Sudhakaran- in fighting toe-to-toe with Pinarayi Vijayan. The leadership change following the party's debacle in the Assembly polls in 2021 proved that the party cannot be written off in the state. If they had lost Thrikkakara, it would have completely destroyed the party and even the UDF.
