M. V. Shreyams Kumar demands detailed probe into UAPA against students
Kalpetta: Loktantrik Janata Dal (LJD) Kerala president M. V. Shreyams Kumar said the government must conduct a detailed inquiry into the incident where two students were arrested under Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA).
“There is nothing wrong in a brochure being recovered from a person or a house. If that person is not associated with illegal activities, UAPA cannot be charged against him or her. Courts and legal experts have mentioned the same many times. But registering such a case despite seemingly not having enough evidence is not approved by the public’s conscience,” he said.
“Police imposing their authority is not democratic. The chief minister himself has clarified that such was not the ruling LDF government’s stance. Attempts to misuse existing laws are concerning. Illegal political activities must be brought to the notice of the public with maturity,” Shreyams Kumar said.
There must be an investigation if any police centres are working to defame the government, he added.
