M Sivasankar’s fall from a top bureaucrat to accused
Thiruvananthapuram: M Sivasankar, former principal secretary to the Chief Minister, has made a close relationship with gold smuggling case accused and illegally helped them while serving in a top post of the government. The senior IAS official was arrested after the probe official suspected that his activities had led to anti-national activities and benefited the smuggling racket.
Earlier, Sivasankar claimed that he did not know that Swapna Suresh and Sarith were involved in gold smuggling. But once, the probe team started to recover the evidence proving Sivasankar’s links with the accused, the IAS officer was completely trapped.
Following this, he was suspended from service and appeared continuously before the investigation agencies for interrogations. Finally, he was cornered when he failed to defend himself before the ED and Customs.
It is still unclear how a senior official like Sivasankar fell into the trap of a smuggling racket forgetting the position he holds and his responsibility towards the government.
Even the Chief Minister’s office came under scanner after the probe team started investigating whether Sivasankar’s deals affected national security.
In the initial phase of the probe, Swapna Suresh, key accused in the gold smuggling case, has stated that Sivasankar has no links with the gold smuggling case.
But Sivasankar’s phone calls and meetings with the accused and his involvement in arranging a flat and openig of a bank locker trapped him.
It is assumed that Sivasankar might have realised nil chances of escape from the case after the probe team recovered digital evidence against him.
The probe officials also confirmed that Sivasankar pretended to be unwell and got hospitalised as part of his plan to delay arrest. But during the hospital days, Sivasankar would have feared arrest and no chance of escape.
The investigation agencies have already found that the money earned through gold smuggling in Kerala was used for terrorist activities. Hence, Sivasankar’s involvement in anti-national activities was also probed. Sivasankar helped Swapna Suresh obtain a job in secretariat even though she did not hold any educational qualification for the post.
Many people reported that Swapna was free to roam in Sivasankar’ s office.
Meanwhile, minister G Sudhakaran’s stance has revealed that the government completely disowned Sivasankar. Sudhakaran has openly raised treachery charges against Sivasankar. Other ministers also joined him after Sivasankar was removed from Chief Minister’s office.
Sivasankar has failed to think of the value of his post and office after teaming up with the gold smuggling racket. He was one of the most trusted officers of the Chief Minister. But his lapses in his relationships trapped him in such a big offence.
