M R Bijulal arrested in treasury fraud case
Kochi: M. R. Bijulal, senior accountant, Sub Treasury, Vanchiyoor, who was suspended from service for financial fraud, has been arrested by the police here on Wednesday.
Bijulal was arrested from the office of his advocate Poonthura Soman, located behind the Vanchiyoor court.
Bijulal had allegedly withdrawn around Rs 2 crore from the District Collector's account illegally and deposited it in his personal account and also in the account of his wife. The finance department, the other day, had suspended him pending an enquiry.
Denying all the allegations, Bijulal said that he had not committed any crime and someone else had used his account to transfer the money. “I have not used anyone’s password to transfer money. I have not transferred a pie from the treasury account. Someone else would have used the account details and committed the fraud,” he said.
Bijulal also alleged that the cash in his account was won by playing Rummy online and welcomed the police investigation into the fraud.
Bijulal had come to his advocate’s office on Wednesday morning to surrender. His bail plea was rejected by the court. While speaking to the media, Bijulal was arrested by police. He was taken to the commissioner’s office.
Bijulal used the username and password of a retired official and transferred Rs 61.23 lakh to his bank accounts. Bijulal kept Rs 1.37 crore in the treasury account as he could not withdraw.
Though the financial irregularities started taking place from April 20, it was noticed only on July 27. It was found in the primary investigation that Bijulal was responsible for misappropriating the amount.
A special investigation team was formed to nab Bijulal. But as the accused was not arrested several days after the fraud came to light, the investigation was handed over to the district Crime Branch.
Assistant Commissioner Sulfikkar is leading the investigation. A team including the Vanchiyoor CI, a probation SI at Vanchiyoor station, shadow police officers and two cyber experts are investigating the case.
