Thiruvananthapuram: Local Self Government bodies can now permit mining and removal of sand to facilitate the construction of houses up to 5,000 square feet. The order has come into effect from Saturday onwards.

Earlier, the public needed permission from Mining and Geology Department to remove sand from the construction area.

At the same time, a decision was taken to grant a special permit allowing the transport of minerals up to 150 tons for household needs. Meanwhile, royalty for quarry mining increased in the state. As a result, the raw materials used for construction works will increase from Saturday onwards.

Additionally, quarry permits will be issued for three years instead of a year. Further, the licence period for quarrying on more than one hectare of land has been increased from 12 to 15 years. However, the fine for resuming quarry activities after the licence expiry has been increased from Rs 25,000 to Rs 3 lakh.
