Lockdown has been all doom and gloom for the handloom industry
Karunagappally: The relaxations in lockdown have not helped the handloom industry. The workers are yet to receive payment for fabric sold months earlier and now they have no work.
Workers under the limits of the Handloom Development Corporation sub centre here in Kollam district are the ones facing the crisis. These workers were provided with threads by the corporation to weave fabrics in their own looms. Around 50 such workers reside inside Karunagappally. They had been weaving fabric for school uniforms.
These workers were provided with threads from the collections centre in Kollam. But as lockdown was imposed, the supply of threads was halted. Fabrics completed by each worker stayed with them for months.
But when the relaxations were announced, the corporation sub centre collected the finished fabrics. However, the workers are yet to be paid.
